It’s hard to imagine improving upon a view as fine as the one from this historic waterfront property in Virginia. In this design, we followed a simple strategy using elemental materials: stone, heat and water.

The owners wanted an in-ground spa to promote healthy and contemplative relaxation. We restored an existing agricultural outbuilding to house equipment and provide shelter for the outdoor shower. The stone terrace is situated to exploit the magnificent views and allow full enjoyment of the landscape through changing seasons. Custom teak benches and dry laid stone walls contribute to the “rustic zen” aesthetic that the owners desired.  We considered both a pergola and a fire pit, but decided to keep it simple for the time-being.
